Fact File

  • West Hampstead’s listed fire station opened in 1901; it’s still operational today.
  • Between the 16thand 18thcenturies, West Hampstead was in fact called West End. When the train station on West End Lane was constructed it was then renamed West Hampstead for the avoidance of confusion with the ‘other’ West End located in Central London’s theatre district.
  • Singer Dusty Springfield was born in West Hampstead in 1939.

  • The very popular Farmers’ Market at West Hampstead Thameslink station was set up in 2012 and runs every Saturday.

Education 

West Hampstead has seven secondary schools, three sixth form colleges and 23 primary schools. Camden Council has also recently set out plans to extend some of the existing primary schools to offer more places. An application has also been submitted to launch a new free school called West Hampstead International School. If it’s approved, this new school will mean 1,600 extra places across both secondary and primary age groups.
