In the early 19thcentury, Pimlico was originally created as an extension to Belgravia – which sits to the north – by esteemed master builder Thomas Cubitt. In fact, Cubitt’s statue can now be found looking out on the corner of Denbigh Street and St George’s Drive.

The elegant garden squares and stucco buildings you’ll find in Pimlico rival any similar ones in Belgravia, plus it’s also home to Dolphin Square, built in 1937, which was in those days proudly sold as having the biggest block of self-contained flats in Europe.

Over the years since then, Dolphin Square has become home to a number of MPs and high ranking lawyers and with so many places to eat, shop and relax it’s not hard to see why.

Within easy reach by walking, cycling or bus of Westminster, Chelsea and the West End, Pimlico has three Zone 1 Tube stations very close by: Pimlico, located on the Victoria line; Sloane Square on the District and Circle lines and Victoria on the District, Victoria and Circle lines.

  • A 1940s comedy film with the name “Passport to Pimlico” was based on the area, receiving an Oscar nomination in 1949.
  • Victoria Train Station used to be called the Pimlico Terminal back in the 1800s.
  • Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain lived in Pimlico between 1923 and 1935.

Local Amenities

  • Pimlico Farmers Market takes place in the square every Saturday from 9am offering the freshest seafood (including oysters at certain times of the year) as well as organic vegetables and fruit.
  • If shopping is you’re your idea of a great day out, Pimlico Road leading into sister neighbourhood Belgravia, offers a wealth of high end shops and is fast becoming world renowned for its range of interiors and home furnishing stores.
  • The world-famous Tate Britain contains the most extensive collection of British art found anywhere on the planet, from the year 1500 to modern day. There are masterpieces galore by artists such as Hogarth, Gainsborough, Whistler and Millais as well as more current artists like Francis Bacon and Damien Hirst.

Education 

Pimlico has a large range of local state and private schools for children of all ages. Pimlico Academy (secondary school) and Pimlico Primary are the main state schools.

Alongside Pimlico Academy you’ll find two other local comprehensive state schools – The Grey Coat Hospital (girls only, aged 11 to 18) in Greycoat Place, which like the academy, is classed as “outstanding” by OFSTED, and Westminster City Boys (ages 11 to 18) in Palace Street.

Independent schools include Westminster Under School, Eaton Square School, More House School (for girls aged 11-18) and Sussex House (for boys aged 8-13). For the little ones there’s a great range of nursery schools, including Tachbrook Nursery School, Abbots Manor Community Nursery, Angel Community Nursery and Young England Kindergarten.
