Ever since its inception, the pretty and diverse London city suburb of Putney is a haven of calm away from the crowds and noise of the centre. Despite this, it’s only 20 minutes away from Waterloo station so it is certainly well connected, both to neighbouring boroughs and the rest of the UK. With the River Thames sitting just north and many of London’s most attractive green spaces to the west and south, Putney has retained its city life feel balanced with plenty of fresh open fields and places to relax.

Putney has a noticeable air of sophistication, with golf, cricket and tennis clubs all within easy reach. There is also no shortage of smart bars and trendy restaurants which draw people in to socialise. Over the summer, and particularly at weekends, many rowing clubs descend on riverside cafes and pubs after a day of fun on the Thames, bringing with them a real sense of community. Add to this a large collection of elegant period properties and modern new builds, a busy shopping centre and coffee shops aplenty, and it’s no wonder Putney is so popular with families in particular.

Fact File

  • Located between Putney and Fulham, the first wooden framed Putney Bridge was finished in 1729. It was to become only the second bridge which crossed the Thames (London Bridge was the first)
  • Putney marks the starting point of the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race. Competitors set off on Putney Embankment from a concrete bollard referred to as The University Stone.
  • Beneath Putney Bridge there are two cages which make up part of the Victorian sewer relief system. Originally designed to prevent overflow, there has long since been a myth that criminals were held captive in these cages and left to drown with each tidal surge.

Local Amenities

  • Putney is a great for shoppers, with a range of high end clothing chains lining Putney High Street through to the mix of outlets in the Putney Exchange Shopping Centre. There is also a very popular new bakery in Lacy Road called Gail’s.
  • Putney Library is open 6 days a week (closed Tuesdays) offering a number of study rooms, free internet access, and a broad selection of DVDs and CDs.
  • Putney is perfect if you’re looking for somewhere to kick back for a while. Why not take a long walk through one of the attractive parks or make your way to The Escape London spa for a luxurious pampering session.

Education

Putney residents can take their pick from several local state and private schools. Hotham Primary School, Our Lady of Victories Primary School, Brandlehow Primary School and St. Mary’s CE Primary School are very highly regarded for children of 11 and under. Secondary options include a couple of academies, Ashcroft Technology Academy and ARK Putney Academy. There are a number of private schools here too, such as Putney High for girls, St Paul’s School for boys and The Roche School.
